Natural Healing Products

Natural Healing Products are made from herbs, plants and other substances that people use to help keep healthy or treat a health condition. Herbs and other herbal ingredients can be found in teas, syrups, oils, tinctures (liquid extracts), or dry herbal pills and capsules. Many of these herbs are safe when taken in the right doses. However, they may not be safe for everyone or interact with certain medications. Herbal remedies aren’t regulated the same way as prescription medicines and they don’t have the same safety standards. For example, not all herbal supplements are safe for pregnant women or children, and some can be dangerous if they are used incorrectly or taken in large doses. Health Canada keeps a listing of recent advisories, warnings and recalls related to natural health products.

Harnessing the Power of Nature: Exploring the Benefits of Natural Healing Products

People have been using herbs to improve their health and treat illnesses for thousands of years. In some cases, they helped inspire modern pharmaceutical drugs. For example, people drank willow bark tea for centuries to relieve fever, and pharmaceutical companies later developed aspirin from willow bark.

Even when it’s labeled as a natural product, a natural health product (NHP) still contains chemicals. Some are necessary for life—such as oxygen, iron and vitamins—but others can be harmful if they are inhaled or ingested in high doses. Some of these chemicals, like mercury, snake venom, and arsenic from castor beans, are deadly. Others, such as chlorine and isopropyl alcohol, can be toxic if they are inhaled or swallowed.
